About Hwange National Park

Zimbabwe's largest national park covers 14,650 km² of Kalahari sand, teak woodland and open grassland on the edge of the Botswana border. It is home to one of Africa's great elephant populations — tens of thousands of animals that converge on the waterholes in the dry season.

Hwange is just two and a half hours from Victoria Falls by road, making it the easiest serious safari in the region to add to a Falls visit. Expect lion, buffalo, sable and roan antelope, and some of the best painted-wolf (African wild dog) sightings on the continent.

Don't miss

Highlights

  • Elephant at the waterholes

In September and October, herds of several hundred gather at the pans in the late afternoon.

  • Painted wolves

Hwange holds one of Africa's most-studied wild dog populations, often denning near the Linkwasha and Ngamo areas.

  • Guided walking safaris

Zimbabwe's professional guides are among the most rigorously trained in Africa — walking with one is unforgettable.

  • Rare antelope

Sable, roan, eland and gemsbok all occur here, a rare combination in one park.

  • Night skies

No light pollution for hundreds of kilometres — the Milky Way rises clear over the Kalahari sand.
