Best Time to Visit Victoria Falls: A Month-by-Month Guide

The Falls never switch off, but they change completely through the year. Here is what each season looks, sounds and feels like — from our office a short walk from the rainforest gate.

Rainbow in the spray at Victoria Falls, seen from the rainforest walk

The short answer

For most first-time visitors, June to August is the sweet spot: the Falls are still full, the spray has thinned enough to see across the gorge, and the days are dry and mild. If you want the full thunder of the flood, come February to May. If you want to swim in Devil's Pool or combine the Falls with the best game viewing in Hwange and Chobe, come September to December.

February to May: peak flood

After the summer rains upstream, the Zambezi arrives in full force. This is the Falls at their most powerful — a wall of water across the whole 1.7-kilometre lip and a spray column you can see from 30 kilometres away.

The trade-off is the mist. On the rainforest walk you will be soaked within minutes (we provide raincoats), and at the height of the flood the spray can hide parts of the view. A helicopter flight is the best way to see the full scale of it.

  • Best for: raw power, rainbows, photography from the air
  • Bring: a waterproof phone pouch and shoes that can get wet
  • Note: white-water rafting may be limited or closed at the highest water

June to August: the all-rounder

Water levels start to fall but the Falls stay full and dramatic, and the views open up. Mornings and evenings are cool — pack a warm layer for sunset cruises and early game drives — while days are sunny and dry.

This is also when the bush starts to thin out and animals gather near water, so a trip to Hwange or Chobe pairs perfectly with a few days at the Falls.

  • Best for: first-time visitors, families, combining the Falls with a safari
  • Bring: a fleece or light jacket for early mornings

September to December: low water and Devil's Pool

By late in the year the river is low. On the Zambian side, parts of the Falls dry to bare basalt, revealing the rock face; the Zimbabwean side, with the Main Falls, keeps flowing. This is when Devil's Pool on Livingstone Island opens — a natural rock pool at the very edge of the drop, usually from around August to December depending on water levels.

It gets hot, especially in October, but this is the peak of the dry season for wildlife: elephant crowd the Chobe riverfront and Hwange's waterholes, and game viewing is at its best. White-water rafting runs its full-day, low-water route through the Batoka Gorge.

  • Best for: Devil's Pool, rafting, combining the Falls with top game viewing
  • Bring: sun hat, sunscreen and plenty of water

January: the green season

Summer rains turn the landscape green and the river starts to rise again. Afternoon storms are common but usually short. Prices are often lower and there are fewer visitors — a good time for travellers who don't mind a little rain.

Zimbabwe side or Zambia side?

Most of the Falls' width — including the Main Falls and the longest stretch of viewpoints — is seen from Zimbabwe, which gives the classic front-on view all year round. The Zambian side offers a closer, side-on perspective and access to Livingstone Island and Devil's Pool. With a KAZA UNIVISA you can easily see both.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Victoria Falls?

For a balance of full water and clear views, July is hard to beat. For maximum flood, April; for Devil's Pool and the best nearby game viewing, September or October.

Do Victoria Falls dry up?

No. Flow drops a lot between October and December and parts of the Zambian side can run dry, but the Main Falls on the Zimbabwe side keep flowing all year.

When is Devil's Pool open?

Usually from around August to December, when the river is low enough to swim safely at the edge. Exact dates depend on water levels each year.

How many days do I need at Victoria Falls?

Two to three nights lets you do the guided Falls tour, a sunset cruise and one or two activities without rushing. Add a Chobe day trip for a fourth day.
